Igli Totozani, chosen by the Socialist Party as the new Ombudsman,
received 127 votes in favor in the plenary session, becoming the second
name that will lead this institution after Ermir Dobjani.

Mr. Dobjani had applied at the Socialist Party, but the commission established by this party chose Igli Totozani among 33 candidates. His candidacy was safe to pass in Parliament, because PM Berisha had decided a long time ago to let the Socialist Party chose the Ombudsman.

Totozani was graduated with golden medal at the Faculty of Justice at the Tirana University, and also received a special order in Geneva. He has received the PhD and has been active in defending the human rights in prisons. He has also been engaged in the media as an analyst for different issues.

From Brussels, the Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule greeted the way how this process was finalized, which he considered as an important step in the consolidation of dialogue between the ruling majority and opposition.

“This is a development that paves the road for fulfilling one of the key priorities as identified by the European Commission at the Opinion for Albania’s EU membership application. This is another sign of the new impulse that Albania is winning in the EU integration road. I hope to see further positive developments in 2012, for the other priorities”, Fule declared.

The EU representative in Tirana, Ettore Sequi, greeted the election of Totozani for the Ombudsman and congratulated the Albanian Parliament and the political forces for successfully choosing the nominee through a new transparent and open way.

“I appreciate the readiness of the government for voting the candidate proposed by the opposition. I also appreciate this nomination as part of the key priorities of the opinion for Albania’s EU membership application”, Fule added.

The voting of Totozani as Ombudsman was greeted by the OSCE presence in Tirana, which covers the human rights.
