The Albanian President, Bamir Topi and the US Ambassador Alexander
Arvizu discussed the current political and institutional situation in
Albania, focusing on the indispensability of a political cooperation
among the Albanian political class.

Ambassador Arvizu underlined the necessity for progressing with the reforms, and for this reason, the responsibility belongs to the Albanian political class.

The Head of the Albanian State also noted that the Albanian political class needs to join forces for facing the important political challenges for a visible and efficient integration.

The Presidency press release states that the President and the US Ambassador shared the same opinion that the majority and the opposition should restart constructive and institutional dialogue, and urge political cooperation in service of the country’s future.

Arvizu: Political will for reforms

The US Ambassador in Tirana, Alexander Arvizu asked the main actors of the Albanian ruling class to show political will for progressing with the reforms that the country needs, a road that was successfully followed by Slovenia and Croatia.

Arvizu emphasized that the Albanians play an important role in their convictions and what they demand by their leaders.

“It is very important for people to embrace reforms and progress, and this should be a national effort. I know that people say that it is difficult, because there are deep political differences, but neighbors like Slovenia and Croatia have passed this obstacle for progressing towards the European Union, and there is no reason why this shouldn’t happen in Albania. It is up to the political actors to find the conviction and commitment, but the Albanians also should demand this from their leaders”, Arvizu declared.

The ambassador gave this press release in front of the Tirana City Hall, where he attended a 1 hour meeting with the Mayor Lulzim Basha.

“The US Embassy has a long cooperation tradition with the Municipality of Tirana, and we are waiting to continue this road”, Arvizu declared, emphasizing that the main goal is the improvement of the citizen’s life, taking in consideration that one third of the entire population in this country is concentrated in Tirana.

While the Tirana Mayor, Lulzim Basha declared that he has the ambassador’s support for cooperation in many fields, declaring that the local government will be transparent and efficient, in service of the citizens.

Integration, Arvizu: Politics needs unification

The US Ambassador in Tirana, Alexander Arvizu declared that they need more unity from the political class and a national pact for the EU integration.

During a short conference for the media, released after meeting the Foreign Minister Edmond Haxhinasto, Arvizu emphasized the importance of implementing the 12 EU recommendations.

On his behalf, Haxhinasto declared that Albania has full support from the EU and USA for the integration process.

A few days ago, the US Ambassador declared that Albania has an indispensable need for reforms in the Electoral Code.

“The Electoral Code is indinspensable. The electoral code, according to the latest report of OSCE-ODIHR, has many gaps that should be filled”, Arvizu declared.
