A Top Channel documentary, promoting religious coexistence in a small village in Albania earned a nomination on the “Jacques Chirac Award”, selected between over 100 other contestants. Usually the award goes to distinct personalities and never before a whole community has been nominated.
Top Channel reporter Marin Mema brought to the public the reality in the small community of Malbardhë, where the Muslim majority helped raising funds for the reconstruction of the old church in the village, where only 5% of the population adheres to the Catholicism.
Albania’s former Foreign Minister, Besnik Mustafaj, is one of the 12 members of the Award committee, which consists of different notorious personalities from all over the world. He explains the film was very welcomed and has managed to be shortlisted to the 5 potential winners. “It shows the appreciation for the attitude of Muslim community there and as well for the reporter who told it”, Mustafa said, naming Nobel Prize Winner Malala Yousafzai and San Edigio director as pas winners of the award. The ceremony will be held in Paris in November, and the winner will also receive 100 000 euro.
