A group of four MPs at the Dutch Parliament have drafted a motion to suspend the free movement of the Albanian people at the Schengen area.
On April 11th, the Dutch Parliament discussed the motion and received the votes of the majority. Now the Parliament will ask the Dutch government to propose it to the European Commission, as the start of a so-called “braking procedure”, which would suspend free movement for Albanians in the Schengen Area.
The motion was brought by the Christian-Democratic lawmaker, Madeleine van Toorenburg, and has three other co-authors: Jeroen van Wijngaarden; Jasper van Dijk; Nico Drost.
Their argument is that the number of criminals originating from Albania has increased due to abuses with the Schengen visa.
This is not the first time that Dutch politicians undertake similar initiatives against Albanians. Last year there was an attempt to veto Albania’s EU accession negotiations. And it was the Dutch politicians again, in 2013, who attempted to veto Albania’s EU candidate status.
