Tirana was selected by the World Health Organization as one of the cities that has progressed more with the air-pollution reduction policies.
The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, attended the “Reducing Air Pollution – Improving our Children’s Health” conference, organized in Geneva and that was attended by Ministers, Mayors and by many representatives of inter-government organizations, to discuss the challenges of reducing pollution.
Veliaj said that Tirana has had significant improvement, compared to three years ago, but a lot remains to be done.
Quoting the WHO report, which raises the alarm that younger children suffer more from the pollution emitted by vehicles, Veliaj appealed citizens to drive less and walk more, or focus on alternative transportation methods.
The Mayor declared that the environment agenda remains a priority for the Tirana Municipality, by adding more pedestrian roads, by planting a record-breaking number of trees and by reducing the usage of vehicles.
In his visit in Switzerland, Veliaj was welcomed by the Geneva Mayor, Sami Kanaan. Both counterparts expressed the readiness to cooperate in matters of common interest.
