Three reasons why Kosovo-Albania trade exchange is not where it should be

The governments of Albania and Kosovo signed a series of new agreements, but these meetings held regularly in the past three years, however, have not produced the results that were expected.

Ilir Ciko, expert of economic and international trade matters, said on Top Channel that the countries do not fulfill each other’s economic needs.

“These are two small economies, both oriented towards the EU. Even if there was no border, no customs at all, it would be very difficult to reach the level we would like, because these economies don’t fulfill the needs of each other”, Ciko said.

The internal structuring of Albanian and Kosovo economies, on the other hand, also dictates the trade echange between both countries, according to Ciko: “Many economic sectors are owned by monopolies that are an obstacle for foreign companies, even the ones coming from Kosovo”, he added.

Ilir Ciko says that there should be another approach for achieving a joint economy between both countries: “The most positive approach should be treating the markets of Albania and Kosovo as a single one, to better compete in the regional market”, Ciko declared.
