The Kosovo issue is expected to eclipse the Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which firmly opposes its independence.
The Serbian President, Alexandar Vucic, announced that there will be a referendum about Kosovo. He said that his stances on the issue are now made clear to the church officials.
“The highest administrative institution of the Serbian church will discuss the delicate topics that are related to the difficult situation in Kosovo and Metohija”, the Serbian theologist, Mladen Aleksic, said for BIRN.
He underlines that when Vucic made public the idea that there could be a border correction between Serbia and Kosovo, the Serbian clergy opposed it immediately, saying they are against any concession.
The stance of the Serbian church was criticized by media outlets, but this has been seen as an attack against the church itself, which wants to continue keeping a hard line against Prishtina.
