Nivica, one of the most important medieval centers of Albania’s southern
coastline was known historically for carving decorating stones of
tower-type houses, characteristic of the area.
The village has more than 50 gates that are more than 100 years old, decorated with local motives. Some of them have religious motives.
After two decades, the stone masters have emigrated, as most of the other residents. One young man has returned hope to the village, however, who is decorating once again the homes of Nivica.
His name is Dhimo Gjino, and, thanks to him, the traditional motives of gates are once again coming to life.
He has inherited this sort of art from his father, but he has also studied the old traditional gates of the area.
