25 years ago, the journalist of “Koha Jone”, Martin Leka, was finally released from prison.
He says that he was arrested because of an article he wrote on the newspaper. Leka remembers how international pressure forced then President Berisha to decree his freedom.
Leka stayed in prison for three years because he said that the government, through a secret order, was not allowing officers to stay armed outside their bases, although they were allowed by law.
In an interview for Top Channel, Martin Leka says that Koha Jone at that time was suffering a long wave of psychological prosecution.
“This was a proper political act that went against the freedom of press. It was against the “’Koha Jone’ newspaper. Aleksander (Frangaj) was found innocent, and I was sentenced to two years in prison”, he says.
“It was a shocking day for the free perss. He was imprisoned unjustly, together with Alexander Frangaj. They were both sentenced to prison. Koha Jone was the only newspaper that was standing against the power of that time. It was a battle between the free press and power”, said Nikolle Lesi, owner of the newspaper.
