The announcement was given this Wednesday by the leader of the hunger
strike, Nertila Qafzezi, who declared that the strike reached its goal,
which was raising awareness among the public opinion and international
institutions, and that the protesters are waiting for Prime Minister
Rama to complete their requests.
“We were able to raise awareness among the public opinion and the international institutions. We are waiting for our requests to be completed by the Prime Minister”, Qafzezi declared.
The hunger strike was interrupted when the Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefa Fule, arrived in Tirana and announced the Commission’s decision to the Albanian government, which suggests the candidate status for Albania.
During the joint press release with Rama, Fule also spoke about the hunger strike.
“I have seen the hunger strike of the former public employees with concern. I appeal the protesters to not put their lives in danger. We are watching the cases closely and we are discussing regularly with the government”, Fule declared.
The hunger strike had the support of the opposition during these two weeks. The Democratic Party leader and other Parliament Members have visited the protesters time after time, and yet they declared that the strike was not political.
Meanwhile, 17 former political prisoners are continuing another hunger strike, demanding an immediate payment of the compensation, although the Ministry of Social Welfare has already started the payment for this category.
Most of the political prisoners distanced themselves from the strike. The Head of the Former Political Prisoners Association, Skender Tufa, considered the strike politically biased and encouraged by the Democratic Party.
