The English without fruit and vegetables in the shelves; Can Albania fill the void left by Morocco?

27/02/2023 21:01

Great Britain is currently going through a serious crisis of supply of some vegetable and fruit products, mainly tomatoes, cucumbers, or lettuce, as the 4 largest supermarkets have imposed rationing on the number of products consumers can buy.

Bad weather and harvest  in countries such as Spain or Morocco, where 25 percent of tomatoes for the British market come from, but also Brexit are cited as the causes.

This situation creates trade opportunities for other countries that are not in the EU, such as Albania, at the same distance as Morocco, which is not part of the EU, or a candidate country, but which has historically had trade agreements with Britain.

But can other countries with similar weather and travel distances from Britain find room for trade deals with the country which is outside EU, like Morocco?

Quite a few products from Albania reach the British market.

And what Morocco does, Albania could also very well do, if the latter is more proactive in its economic diplomacy, with a country that needs immigrants, despite the fact that they deport Albanians, but also need agricultural products, coming from a sunny country.

Genuine Albanian diplomacy in Britain may not have much space, through its own fault or not, but the economic diplomacy undoubtedly does, and these developments are examples of its non-application with this country, at the same geographical distance as well as Spain or Morocco.
