Territorial reform without the opposition

As expected, the parties were divided in their stances about the
Conference of Chairmen for the amends of the Territorial Reform
Commission.

The opposition opposed the majority’s request and the decision to continue alone with the new territory division, which the Democratic Party Parliamentary group leader, Edi Paloka, considered an adventure that will have consequences for the politics and our country.

“The consequences are political, but later you will see that no one profits from destability”, Paloka declared.

Top Channel: “When you say that there will be destabilization, what do you mean? Is this a threatening declaration?”

Paloka: This is not threatening. Unfortunately, it has happened frequently in Albania that agreements have not been accepted, and after turmoil they have been forced to sit and agree on much worse agreements. What I said is that this majority is trying to take more votes with this territory division. Certainly that there is a violation of democracy. We protested in 1990 for democracy. Don’t think that we will let Rama take in 2014 what his father was unable to keep.

“We think that this is not the case when the opposition should hold a political stance. We have considered and are still considering the territorial reform as a tachnical matter, and I am sure that with the passing of time, the opposition will become part of this process”, declared the Minister for Parliament Relations, Ilirjan Celibashi.

Due to disagreements at the Conference of Chairmen, the decision will pass to the session of this Thursday. The changes affect the formula of the composition of the territorial reform. From 17 members, 9 are from the majority, 8 from the opposition. The deadline will also be postponed with two months, until June 14th.
