The pollution of the “Uji I Ftohte” area in Tepelena by private
businesses that sell food products has now reached an alarming
proportion.
Environment experts declare that this area has been facing an environmental degration that started with a disease that affected old trees.
“The local government is responsible for the environment. They have given permits to these businesses to operate there”, declared Stefan Rrapi, director of the Environment Protection Agency.
The Head of the Inspectorate, Kico Thimjo, has fined all subjects that have caused high pollution in this area, but this is not enough. Mr.Rrapo explains that they need to intervene for recovering the roots system of these plants.
“Waste materials were thrown throughout the valley, from the factory to the Uji I Ftohte. The waste materials are not managed well. Everything is dumped in the environment. The tree diseases have increased”, he declared.
Once one of the most visited areas in Southern Albania, Tepelena’s Uji I Ftohte is today dominated by pollution, damaged trees ad waste materials since the communist era.
