Tensions rise in Macedonia as political stalemate goes on

President Gjorgje Ivanov is still blocking the political situation in
Macedonia, despite several appeals from international partners, who said
he should authorize Zoran Zaev to form the new government with
Albanians, since they have parliamentary majority.

The President still stands behind the argument that the mandate cannot be given to any individual or party who go against the sovereignty and unity of the state, through platforms drafted by neighboring countries.

The VMRO leader, Nikolla Gruevski, said that the crisis can be overcome only if citizens are allowed to vote if they want Albanian as a second language or not, a step that he sees as something that will divide the country.

The LSDM party of Zoran Zaev said that Gruevski is playing dangerous games. He said there will be other ways to overcome the stalemate, although he didn’t specify what these ways are.

Experts said for Radio Free Europe that the political instability in Macedonia has deteriorated the situation of security. The situation may even escalate, fired by VMRO declarations who say they will defend the country at any cost.

Referring to the violent incidents during protests, the Chairwoman of the Helsinki Committee, Uranija Pirovska, said they were organized with the purpose to intimidate those who criticized the regime.

She added that the situation may even get worse if the President keeps refusing to authorize Zaev as Prime Minister.
