“Telekom Serbia” has requested an official authorization by the Albanian government to buy Telekom Albania.

Top Channel has learned that the directors of Telekom Serbia met with officials of the Albanian Ministry of Infrastructure, who told them that although the government has no role in a possible transaction between private companies, their entrance in the Albanian market, in a strategic sector such as telecommunication, would not be welcomed.

Directors of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Telecommunication told the officials that entering the Albanian market wouldn’t be good for their business as well since it could cause unpleasant political reactions.

“The government of Albania prefers another profile of investors in this important strategic sector, while we are ready to welcome Serbian investments in all other economic areas”.

The government, however, claims that they cannot stop the transaction. The government of Albania has no ownership rights on Telekom Albania and no role in the financial transactions between both private companies.

The only role of the Albanian institutions is regulatory, through the Postal and Electronic Communication Authority, which allows the transfer of licenses when transactions take place; or through the Competition Authority,

Sources from the government say that these two mechanisms will not be able to interfere in a possible private transaction between two operators with a long experience in the market.

Serbian media say that Telekom Serbia has made the highest bid for Telekom Albania, offering 60 million EUR. This makes Telekom Serbia the favourite buyer of Telekom Albania, a situation that came by surprise to anyone.
