The Albanian Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, used his first public
appearance to thank the state police for guaranteeing safety during the
new year’s celebrations.
While publishing the monthly bulletin “December 2013”, which, compared to December 2012 has fewer crimes and murders, more successful police operations against drug traffic and corruption, the Minister also mentioned the explosive found in Kurbin electricity poles.
“This is a very serious attack, which reminds us what happened in 2000, 2001 and 2002, when Berisha was in opposition. This is the first terrorist act with clear terrorist messages. This is the first time that it happens, but I invite everyone to distance themselves from this and condemn the attack”, Tahiri declared.
Minister Tahiri underlined that the police is in the second phase of reformation, turning into a police that stays closer to the citizens and with more powerful area inspectors.
“You know that there are more than 800 police officers in a hotel that serves to the General Directory of the State Police. We are working for a police structures that stays closer to citizens. The legal package that it being planned together with our international partners, who I’d like to thank, include almost the entire legal structure of the state police and law enforcing agencies. Certainly that the law for the state police is included in most of it, and we are planning a new law, but this will remain to be discussed.
The Interior Minister spoke about the death of Gazmir Marku, who was killed by the police. Tahiri declared that it happened during a mission in which the police was establishing law and order.
“I want to reiterate my position on this matter. I thank the police employees who participated in this action. Times have changed. Back then it was their colleagues who got killed. Today we are doing everything possible to guarantee that no police officer will lose in the fight against crime, and secondly, those who dare to address the police with guns will pay the price for their illegal action”, the Minister declared.
