The new government’s first decision regarding the January 21st events,
where four protesters were killed, is the firing of the two most
controversial National Guard officers.
The Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, has fired Agim Llupo and Ndrea Prendi, respectively former officer and commander.
Prendi and Llupo were suspended for the investigations of the January 21st events. Their expulsion from the National Guard structures was made for the fact that they were convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
The press release says that the Interior Minister’s order is based on the Albanian Constitution, the National Guard Law, the Personnel Regulation and the Discipline Regulation.
Two days ago the Court of Appeal sentenced Ndrea Prendi to one year in prison, and Agim Llupo to three years in prison, but none of them will serve any time, because Prendi’s house arrest and Llupo’s detention before trial has already served the verdict’s time. The Court of Appeal verdict caused a strong reaction through the public opinion.
The Court, led by Agim Bendo, who was appointed at the Court of Appeal only a few days before the June 23rd elections, rejected the murder charges and sentenced Prendi and Llupo only for involuntary manslaughter, an accusation that wasn’t part of the investigation and wasn’t even requested by the Prosecution.
