The Albanian Minister of Interior, Saimir Tahiri, made an appeal from
Tirana after meeting with his Italian counterpart, Angelino Alfano, for
the Western Balkan Interior Ministers to be part of the EU Forum of
Interior Ministers.
“The first proposition is to include the Interior Ministers of the region in the forum of the EU Interior Ministers. We consider this a good way to address the fight against terrorism and extremism. The second proposition is to include Albania and the other countries of the region in the information exchanging process, so that we can be more efficient in addressing the problems”, Tahiri declared.
Alfano added that they will ask the Lithuanian Presidency to involve the Western Balkan countries in the cooperation for the fight against terrorism. The Italian Interior Minister adds that the Balkan region should not be considered by foreign fighters as a shelter to get trained for fighting in Syria.
“Certainly that this part of the world might be considered by Foreign fighters and terrorist as some place they can use before going to war locations. This part of the world could also be considered as a shelter where these fighters might want to train before entering war zones like Syria. For Europe, this part of the world has a strategic importance, so that we can fight together and reinforce the cooperation in the fight against this phenomenon”, Alfano declared.
Later Alfano was welcomed in a meeting by Prime Minister Rama, with whom he valued the importance of cooperation in the fight against terrorism. According to a press release from the Prime Minister’s office, Rama greeted the establishing of a joint task-force between Albania and Italy, while he discussed with the Italian Minister about the fight against organized crime.
