Supreme Court orders the special prosecution to investigate the tragic events of January 21, 2011

The Supreme Court of Albania decided today that the “January 21” case of the protest with four victims of the former socialist opposition, should be handed over to the Special Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office “SPAK”.

The criminal panel of the Supreme Court, after hearing the reports, decided to change the decision of the Court of Appeal and ordered the SPAK to record the investigations on the “January 21” case.

Today’s session, which started at 1:00 p.m., was involved in a debate between Judge Sokol Binaj and the Special Prosecutor, Alfred Shehu, as the latter asked the panel to dismiss the appeal.

In the protest on January 21, 2011, Aleks Nika, Ziver Veizi, Hekuran Deda and Faik Myrtaj lost their lives, shot dead in front of the prime minister’s office by the security forces of the building, in the protest called by the Socialist Party then in opposition.

The first investigation brought as defendants for the incident the effective law enforcement officers Ndrea Prendi and Agim Llupo, who were sentenced by the appeal to 1 and 3 years in prison for “manslaughter”.
