Mimoza Muhameti, a member of the oilwomen hunger strike in the Ballsh refinery, tried to sacrifice herself by cutting her wrists last night.

The 53-year-old took the drastic action out of the hopelessness of the situation, with no solution in sight. It was another woman striker who intervened and prevented most serious consequences of the 53-year-old’s action.

For 24 days, women oil workers have been on hunger strike demanding arrears of wages, won earlier in court. Their health and psychological condition is extremely aggravated.

The strikers are outraged by the indifference of the government and the prime minister, but also by the president of the republic, who yesterday awarded two decorations in Bylis near Ballsh, and did not visit the striking women.

The head of the oilworkers union Sokol Dautaj says that the oil workers’ protests have been going on for a year. He is hopeful that their demands will be met by discussions with the Prime Minister.
