Citing a series of violations that the state, the Guard of the Republic and the justice bodies reflected on the investigation of January 21, 2011 kilings, the Strasbourg Court has drawn the attention of the authorities for not clarifying the murder of Aleks Nika.

In its decision, the Court of Human Rights, after the animation by the Nika family, considers the state guilty of killing the demonstrator.

Three other people Hekuran Deda, Faiks Myrtaj and Ziver Veizaj were killed on the boulevard in the infamous protest. The court assesses that the state failed to control the event and used lethal force, for which it must be held responsible.

In fact, on the January 21 event, the Albanian judiciary found guilty only the former head of the Guard, Ndrea Prendi and Agim Llupon, one sentenced to 1 year in prison and the other to 3 years. Strasbourg insists there is a need for impartial, credible and thorough investigations.

On January 21, 2011, the then socialist opposition called a protest after the Meta-Prifti corruption video scandal. Protesters gathered in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, chanting against then DP Prime Minister Sali Berisha. The protest ended in tragedy and further investigations were concluded with verdicts for manslaughter. For 12 years, family members have expressed objections to the investigations, culminating in the protest in front of the SPAK prosecutor’s office where they demanded an investigation of January 21 as a state crime.
