Many property ownership cases between Albanian landowners and the Albanian government were taken to the European Court of Strasbourg, which has ruled for many cases against the Albanian government, with compensation orders mounting up to 50 million EUR. The figure was made public by the US State Department in the annual declaration of business climate.
“So far, the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg has made 29 rulings in favor of land owners, with a total cost of 50 million USD”, the US State department report says.
The compensation has started in 1993, but, according to the US State Department, the process has been slow and was undermined by corruption, forcing more owners to address the Strasbourg Court.
