The Economist Intelligence Unit, a British research and analyze agency,
has made a report about the political and economic developments in
Albania, after the left centered majority came to power.

The report gives some predictions for the developments of the country for 2014-2015. The main conclusion of the Economist Intelligence Unit is closely related with the candidate status that will be discussed in June.

“The Economist Intelligence Unit” believes that through the reforms that have started, Albania will receive the candidate status in mid 2014. The new majority has a strong mandate and a huge ideological cohesion, compared to the government. This allows the laws and their implementation in many areas.

The Economist Intelligence Unit analyzes the political profiles of the most important political actors in the country. This is what the report says for Prime Minister Edi Rama.

“Prime Minister Edi Rama, a former artist, proved in his political career to have good political abilities, by turning into a successful Mayor for Tirana, by realizing spectacular changes during his time in the Municipality. Different from Mr.Berisha, who led the Democratic Party with an iron fist, Rama faced several challenges in the Socialist Party. Rama has consolidated the leadership in his party. He has avoided old figures by surrounding himself with politicians of a new generation, some of whom are part of the government cabinet”.

The report predicts that the future of the reforms led by Prime Minister Rama seems shinier than in the past years, but the complex nature of several problems with corruption will bring many obstacles in implementing the reforms. As for the ally of Mr.Rama, the Parlaiment Speaker, Ilir Meta, the report says that Meta took once again the king-maker role after June 23rd, after winning the elections of 2009. The report says that Meta will ask for his party to be treated as an equal partner.

The Economist Intelligence Unit predicts difficulties for the new Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, after Sali Berisha left his 22 year leadership.

“Basha, the current Mayor of the Tirana Municipality, is an experienced politician, since he has led 3 Ministries under the Berisha government. However, it will be difficult for Basha to create the leadership figure within the party, which is not used in having other leaders besides Sali Berisha. The former Democratic Party leader, Sali Berisha, will influence Basha for returning the Democratic Party popularity.
