After meeting in Brussels the Albanian Foreign Minister, Edmond
Panariti, Edward Kukan and Hannes Swoboda invited the Albanian politics
to take its responsibilities and close the remained duties on time.

“Time is flying. We are happy that there is a political dialogue, but this is not enough. We need results from this political dialogue. Without them it would be difficult to make progress”, declared Eduard Kukan, head of the European Parliament delegation for Balkan.

“The referendum is a direct democracy and it is good, but time is more important for the moment and organizing a referendum takes time. I think that some important political agreements of a country must be resolved by the politicians, and they’re the ones to take the responsibility rather than leaving it on the people’s back,” Kukan declared.

On his behalf, the leader of the Social Democratic Party at the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda, underlined: “I think that Albania deserves the candidate status. This could be realized through a double process: saying yes to the candidate status for Albania on its 100th anniversary of independence and make it clear that the membership negotiations could start only after the elections will be held in a correct and dignifying way”.

Albania has less than one week for fulfilling the minimal critical results, which means that some laws must be voted in Parliament in order to benefit the recommendation of the Commission for the candidate status, but not for opening the membership negotiations. The decision for giving the status to Albania will be taken by the member countries iin the summit of December 2012.
