During the Council of this Monday, the Foreign Ministers of the European
Union had an informal discussion for Albania. When asked by Top
Channel, the Slovenian Foreign Minister expressed his optimism for a
positive decision this Tuesday for the candidate status.
“I can say that all Foreign Ministers with whom I have discussed support the candidacy of Albania. Even when I speak with them informally, the Ministers say that Albania is prepared to be a candidate for the European Union, since the Parliamentary elections were good. I believe that tomorrow we will have a positive opinion for Albania, and also in the summit of European Prime Ministers by the end of the week. I think that you have good chances. I noted that Mrs.Ashton supports the candidate status for Albania”, declared Minister Karl Erjavec.
The same evaluation came from the Croatian Deputy Prime Minister, Vesna Pusnic, whoa rgued that regardless of the hesitation from some important member countries, most of the European Union supports Albania’s candidacy.
“I know that there are different stances. We have received support from most of the states, but the fact is that there are big states that are skeptic. We know from our experience that from the status and to the starting of negotiations, and then membership, the process is very long. For the moment we think that it would be the right decision, keeping in mind that there is a new generation of politics in Albania, which has the right approach about this. It would be necessary to give the status not only to Albania, but to the entire region”, Pusnic declared.
The Foreign Ministers of the European Union gathered in Brussels to discuss the social-economic issues, the defense and development in the Middle East and Central Africa.
Officially, Western Balkan was the last point of discussion, according to the Council’s agenda, but only due to the reporting of the High Representative, Catherine Ashton, on the progress between Kosovo and Serbia.
