The candidate status has a psychological significance for Albania,
according to the Vice Director of the Southeastern Europe Association,
Johanna Deimel.
In an interview for Deutsche Welle she explained what this confirmation means for our country.
“Albania must continue its preparations for opening the engotiations. Same as the other candidate countries, Albania needs to open the first chapters of negotiations, which are very important but also very difficult. The status, however, is a very big encouragement”, Deimel declared.
The Vice Director explains the polls results of the International Study Institution, which showed that the enthusiasm for the EU dropped from 80% to 77%. According to her, this phenomenon is related to the long waiting time, the postponement of the decision, and the fact that with every negative result, there has been more frustration and some type of fatigue with Europe.
That’s why the candidate status is psychologically important. Demiel mentions the fact that the new government led by Edi Rama has undertaken many concrete steps for the European integration.
This involves painful reforms that bring down old structures and put in question some profits, which causes insecurity and negative reactions among the population. But the people’s support for integration remains high, which is important and positive for the future.
The interview also mentions the case of Lazarat, which was considered a dark stain in Albaina’s image. For the vice director of the Southeastern Europe Association this was an important signal that is given to the international community and the 28 EU countries, an action that came in the right time, brought to the scene in a spectacular way, and certainly, these images help.
