One day before the extraordinary Parliament meeting for passing the two
integration laws and the Parliament Regulation, the Spokesperson for the
Enlargement Commissioner gave an interview for Top Channel, in which he
reiterated the conditions that our country needs to fulfill for the
candidate status.
Besides approving the three laws, Peter Stano underlines that the country should hand over credible results in the war against crime and corruption, and hold free and honest elections.
TCH: If the two laws and the Parliament’s regulation will be voted this Thursday, is that enough for the Commission to recommend the candidate status?
Peter Stano: “The expectancies for Albania’s candidate status were clearly formulated time ago and are known by everyone. These conditions and expectancies include the passing of the three laws; these conditions say that the Commission should report what the government has done in the war against organized crime and corruption, through proactive investigations and penal prosecution by authorities; and the member countries have said and repeated several times since than the they will follow the elections more closely, because these elections are a test for the functionality of the democratic institutions in the country.”
TCH: Can there be free and honest elections with the current Central Election Commission and political pressures against the public administration?
Peter Stano: “What matters, from our view, is that the elections should be held according to the European and international standards. What’s also important is that institutions which guarantee that elections are fairly, should be working effectively, independently and run their activities according to their regulations. This means that we are reiterating our appeal to the political parties to reestablish political consensus and guarantee that the electoral process will be calm and that the elections will be held according to the expectancies and in full accordance with the international and European standards”.
