Although the domestic violence is widespread, only part of it has been
reported. Statistics show that half of the reports are made by wives.
Other reports come from parents and children.

1200 reports have been made in the past six months, 600 from which from wives or girlfriends who lived together with their partners. All others come from children under 18, who faced violence from their parents, and senior parents who received violence from their children.

Police says that 144 people have eben arrested and 1004 others are set free.

“Most of the reports come from Tirana, since the population and the awareness is higher. Then comes Durres, Korca and Fier”, declared Ilir Zhurka, specialist of protection of minors and domestic violence.

While the figures are concerning, reports suggest that only half of the cases have requested a [protection order from the court.

Etleva is one of those women who after her husband was dead, she requested a protection order from her brother in law.

“I’m scared. If it was not for my mother, I would be living on the road. My mother sheltered me and my four year old son, or I would have nowhere to live”, Etleva says.

For the psychologist Valbo Treska, the victims report always after the violence has been continuing for a long time.

“Our entire environment doesn’t allow them to raise their heads. There comes a time when violence becomes so extreme, even due to economic and social causes, and they get the strength to make the report to the police”, Treska said.

Police explains that in 62 cases, violent family members have violated the law and are being investigated for a new case. The Criminal Code foresees two years in prison for domestic violence, while murders within family have a higher sentence than others.
