For the Socialist Party, the government has lost the legitimacy and trust of the public for negotiating the maritime border agreement with Greece for a second time.
The opposition MP Sajmir Tahiri declared that in the next visit in Greece of the Foreign Minister, Edmond Panariti, there should be a multiparty delegation from the Parliament since he has no doubt that the border agreement will be the center of the debate.
“It is important to underline the transparency principle. Every action of the public administration, the government, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister; every conversation held so far, and every preliminary agreement reached by the Greek side or any request made by the Albanian side, and every step that will be taken further, must be transparent for the public so that the Albanians and the independent experts can judge and evaluate, starting from the next visit of the Greek Foreign Minister with his Albanian counterpart, who will absolutely discuss the maritime border agreement. There’s nothing bad in having a delegation of the opposition and Parliamentary commissions that must have their say in the monitoring of this agreement”, Tahiri declared.
The Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister released contradictory statements about the establishment of working groups for this agreement. Tahiri considers this contradiction a chaotic situation in which the government is involved.
“It seems that the Government is aiming to repeat the scenario of the first maritime border agreement with Greece. We can notice the chaotic situation in their public statements about the existence of working groups at the Ministry for this issue. This means that either there are two scenarios, or the government is shortsighted and has no idea what they are doing and what they will do regarding the maritime border agreement. Or maybe they are trying to hide every step that they will take in this agreement, which might cause colossal damages for Albania. On the other hand, we are talking about a government that has lost the public’s trust of not being able to sign an equal agreement in mutual conditions that would guarantee the national and territorial sovereignty of Albania”, Tahiri declared.
By identifying the mistakes that were made in the past agreement and the public awareness for treating this issue, the opposition thinks that this should not be an exclusive agreement of the Albanian majority. Here are the propositions of the Socialist Party.
“The agreement must include the participation of the Parliament, the civil society, the independent experts and everyone else who can contribute. We must absolutely exclude from the negotiating process every technician that participated in the last agreement that was about to cause a colossal damage for the country. I.e Mr. Gerveni and his collaborators, who consumed an act of treason by damaging the national sovereignty of Albania”, Tahiri declared.
