SP, competition for Ombudsman

The Majority asked the opposition several months ago to appoint the
Ombudsman, but the Socialists decided to undertake a new and special
initiative.

Arguing to offer transparence and not politicization of this issue, the Socialist Party opened an online web page in which anyone who thinks of having the capacities for leading the Ombudsman is invited to apply.

This type of application was chosen after a meeting of the Socialist Parliament Group, in which the Opposition leader, Edi Rama, proposed the establishment of an ad-hoc Commission with MPs Eglantina Gjermeni, Besnik Bare, Astrit Beci and members of the National Assembly, Mimoza Hafizi and Gezim Tushi, in order to attract, scrutinize and select the candidacies for the Ombudsman.

Together with these five members, the Commission was joined by two members from the Civil Society, such as the Constitutionalist Luan Omari and Lawyer Vangjel Kosta.

The Socialist leader, Edi Rama, declared that this Commission will make public invitations for every candidacy and will organize hearing sessions. Then the Commission will prepare a report for the Socialist Parliamentary Group.

Based on the constitutional and legal dispositions, the Ombudsman could be represented by any Albanian citizen with high education, experience in human rights and law, who is noted for a clear moral and ethical image, and who is not Parliament MP in the legislature that proposes him.

The opposition will represent the candidacy to the President and he will decree the name, while the Majority decides if they will approve it or not.
