Credible diplomatic sources told Top Channel that Athens has changed its stance regarding the extension of its maritime border from 6 miles from the shore to 12 miles.
This decision was taken after a meeting held behind closed doors between the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, and the highest political staff of the Foreign Ministry, which Tsipras now covers.
The reason, according to Tsipras, is that for such important decisions they need to inform the other parties first.
Sources say that the USA has also asked Greece to cancel this decision. The Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlit Causoglu, had previously declared that any decision of Athens to extend its borders in the Ionian or the Aegean Seas will be considered “Casus Belli” by Turkey, which means “a cause for war”.
The Albanian Foreign Ministry has not reacted. A few days ago it had declared that the extension of the maritime border between Albania and Greece was a right of both countries that could be exerted wherever it was possible.
