The drug addiction has turned into a tragedy in Tirana. A son has
physically confronted his father asking him money to buy drugs, and his
father suffered a fatal injury during the commotion.
Ardian Thaci, 22, has already been ordered by courts to undergo a rehabilitation treatment. Abandoned by his family after the tragedy, he heard his charges for the death of his father.
The Prosecutor said that Thaci had punched his father and caused him to fracture his head on the ground, dying after three days in hospital.
The defensive lawyer declared that institutions were already aware of her client’s situation. She said that the tragedy took place during a hot-blooded moment and under the effect of drugs, which makes it more of an accidental situation.
On September 2013, Ardian Thaci was found guilty for production and possession of drugs. The young man declared in court that he was a user, as the court found out from drug tests.
But since he was caught with 17 grams, it wasn’t considered for personal use, so he was sentenced to two years of probation, with the condition to undergo a treatment and not stay in the company of former convicts, or the Prosecution had the right to return him to prison.
Jordan Daci, professor of Human Rights, says that the law is unclear for this point, and that’s why he sent to Strasbourg the case of drug distribution charges. Daci insisted that the personal usage term is making drug users be sentenced as distributors, while the problem in Albania remains without a solution.
The Court of Tirana websites shows that the Prosecution has charged 106 people with these accusations for 2013.
