Socialist Party proposals included in the calendar

Conference of the gathered whips on the eve of the new parliamentarysession discussed the work plan for the first parliamentary sessionsto be held during September.

Representatives of the majority and the opposition at the meetingagreed to enter in the calendar even the Socialist Party proposalsrelating to constitutional changes.

Proposals essentially include the involvement in constitutionalchanges, those articles relating to the appointment of Constitutionaland High Court. The amendments proposed by Socialist Party inclusion,implies that majority is currently taking a more moderate stance onthe initiative announced by Prime Minister Berisha to hold a popularreferendum.

This attitude of the majority is reinforced by the approval ofLegislation Council meeting on September 6. This Council will be thefocused on the constitutional changes. Whips’ Conference will launchthe new parliamentary session on September 3 at 11:00 o’clock.Yesterday, Assembly Speaker Topalli took a step on behalf of theruling majority, saying that any solution for the immunity lifting isacceptable.

The Democratic Party has demanded the lifting of immunities of seniorofficials as part of the obligations of Albania to gain EU candidatestatus. The opposition has initially been against it and later hasagreed to lift immunity, but have limited their vote with otherconstitutional reforms, including the election by majority of theattorney general.
