The economic assistance the government gives to poor families was increased less than the living cost, deteriorating the situation for the past three years.
Official data from the Institution of Statistics show that the payment a family in need receives has increased with only 2.3% from 2014 to 2017.
For the same period, according to INSTAT, prices have increased by 5.2%. This means that families receive less from the state than three years ago. The real situation for these families has increased by 8.5%.
The past two months there have been many debates about the economic assistance. The opposition accused the government of taking 30,000 poor families off the scheme to save money, while they spend millions for the luxury of officials.
According to the government, the reform of this scheme only aims to take away families that don’t deserve it, so that they can increase support for the families that really need it.
