Slovenia: Albania deserves candidate status

Albania will have the support of Slovenia in the efforts for the EU
candidate status. Within the EU there are countries like Netherlands
that ask Albania to give more efforts, but also countries like Slovenia
that think that Albania has been asked to implement conditions that are
the same to countries that have already started the negotiations.

This is the opinion of the Slovenian Prime Minister, Janes Janza, who declared that he discussed the status issue with Prime Minister Berisha. Mr.Janza declared that with the reforms undertaken in the last year, Albania has shown to the EU that they are a reliable partner.

“Slovenia is not the only country in the European family that supports Albania. We have been in the same situation 10 years ago. We are asking for a common treatment for all countries. This means that we cannot demand from a candidate country to fulfil all conditions before this country starts the negotiations, a phase in which they must fulfil 35 other chapters, which cover all areas. I think that it is not necessary to ask a country to improve all laws without starting the negotiations. This is unreasonable. We talked with the Prime Minister also for the European Council summit, and according to the agenda, we will discuss about the enlargement. This means that there will be an open opportunity to discuss about the status, but it is difficult to predict the result of this debate. And also I cannot know what stance will be held by the European Commission that will make the proposition, but I can say that the stance of Slovenia in that meeting will be in favour of Albania. We think that these reforms are absolutely deserved”, Janza declared.

According to the Slovenian Prime Minister, Albania’s approach to the EU is not only on the Albanians interest, but it is also a good thing for Europe, which sees Albania as a great factor of peace and stability in Balkan.
