The draft law for the Criminal Code amends that criminalize slander are
not something new for the Albanian politics. The changes were warned by
the Albanian Prime Minister since February 12th 2015.
“We will request criminalization of slander when accusations are made by politicians elected by the people. We will sanction the Prosecution’s obligation to act immediately after an accusation”, Rama declared.
The news about this law caused panic and strong reaction through the media, but PM Edi Rama has rejected any speculation that it would punish journalists.
“The slander criminalization has no connection with the press. It should be seen as a crime for any politician that is being paid by the people’s taxes. It is time our society faces the culture of slander. The people does not pay us to slander”, Rama declared.
He said that the article should reflect this purpose. Rama apologized for any misunderstanding.
Ermonela Felaj, Minister for Relations with the Parliament guaranteed that the draft will be changed to remove any misunderstanding.
Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta also confirmed the misunderstanding.
