The sixth anniversary of the Gerdec tragedy was commemorated today. On
March 15th 2008, 26 people died and 300 were injured after an ammunition
dismantling factory in a village 15 kilometers from Tirana suffered a
powerful explosion.
Relatives rushed to courts for justice, but with this case, the Albanian judiciary showed its ugliest and most inhuman side.
There were 29 defendants tried as responsible for the explosion that took 26 lives. Only two of them are currently in prison, Dritan Minxolli and Sokol Ngjeci. Mihal Delijorgji has been free for some time now, while Ylli Pinari was released a few days ago, after his sentence changed from prison to probation.
Kodheli: Gerdec is still a dangerous area
On the sixth anniversary of the Gerdec tragedy, the Minister of Defense, Mimi Kodheli, accused the former “Berisha” government of bad management and abuse. She guaranteed that the current government is working for the rehabilitation of the area and for finalizing the compensation process.
“Gerdec is considered a hot spot that still needs cleansing. There are 68.000 square meters that need rehabilitation, while 7000 square meters have already been rehabilitated”, the Minister of Defense declared.
