Six of the eight prison guards accused for the death of Ilia Kareli were
arrested today after the unanimous verdict of the Prosecutor and the
investigator. These conditions include not being allowed to leave
Greece, to be obliged to appear at the Police court and for one of them
there is a guarantee of 5000 EUR.
It will be difficult to decide about the prison they will be kept in, because wherever they go there might be harsh reactions from prisoners, especially the Albanian ones.
According to the defense lawyers, six of them will appeal the decision by arguing a violation of the criminal procedure.
All of them have denied being part of the tortures, and declared they didn’t want to kill the prisoner who killed the Malandrino guard.
Although Courts are on strike today, the seven other prison guards were summoned to hear the indictment and they will have three days to prepare their declarations.
The prison director is not included in the list of the people who were summoned to testify. He is being charged of covering a crime that took place in his institution.
