Shqevi found guilty for setting friend on fire

Almost one year after the strike of the former political prisoners in
Tirana, the court considered the injury caused to Gjergj Ndreca by a
fire set on by his friend Perikli Shqevi as an instrument used by the
strikers to let the government hear their requests.

This was the motive that made Periki Shqevi set himself on fire, an action for which the 56-year-old was tried by the court on intentional injury charges.

“The defendant acted on direct intentions since it was clear to him that the victim had just soaked himself with fire and that his health would be seriously hurt. Based on the fact that the defendant, the victim and many other friends of them had been staying in a hunger strike for their demands, the court decided that the damaging of their health by putting themselves on fire was a way to achieve their requests. Hence, the injuring of Gjergj Ndreca was an act of protest, and that was the motive for Perikli Shqevi”.

Finding him guilty, the Court sentenced him to three years and a half in prison, but it will be converted to three years in probation, based on the principles of humanism and rehabilitation.

“Based on the wage and the life that the defendant has had, the court decided that it would be humane to suspend his conviction and allow him to show that he has been rehabilitated through a period of three years in probation, and his isolation from the society is not necessary. By implementing law 389 of the Criminal Procedure, since the suspending of the verdict has been ordered, the court orders to not implement the house arrest measure against Perikli Shqevi”, the court decided.

However, Shqevi is still looking for innocence, as he declared for the media.
