Sherefedin Shehu will be the Democratic Party candidate for the Dibra Municipality local elections on September 11. The decision was taken after several days of discussions with local members of the community in the region to ensure full support for the candidacy.
In the last local elections in Dibra, the Democratic Party candidate did not win because opposition was split in 3 candidates, but sources from the major opposition party confirm that differences are now solved and all the fractions have agreed to support Shehu.
Mr. Shehu is set to renounce his MP mandate in order to register as a candidate of the opposition coalition. He was first involved in politics in 2015 when he was named as vice Finance Minister in the first Berisha cabinet. He served as MP for Dibra since 2009 but now must prove he has the support from Dibra voters in an important moment for the opposition who considers this election as a test for the government.
The name that will fill Shehu’s place in Parliament is expected to be Ekrem Spahia, the next in line in the main list, or Dhurata Çupi, who can take the mandate in order for the Democratic Party to fill the required gender quotas in the Dibre region.
Local election in Dibra will be held after ex-Mayor Shukri Xhelili was exonerated after video footage showing him demanding sexual favors in exchange for a working position was published.
