Sheperi residents seek help for damaged church

The Sheperi Church in Zagori is not a first category culture monument,
but it was built by the end of the XVIII century, turning into a
historic center for local residents.

The roof of the Byzantine church combines local black-stone style with stone slab covers, turning into a unique original object.

Residents asked the municipality to repair it, they even collected private donations, but not enough to cover the damage.

The Director of the Gjirokaster Culture Monument Directory, Albert Kasi, said that when an object is not part of the protection list, local governments and their owners are responsible for its reconstruction.

“It doesn’t mean that these monuments should be destroyed because they don’t have the culture-monument status, but everyone is invited to contribute here, starting from local governments. When we talk about cult objects, religious institutions also have responsibilities”, Kasi declared.

The Sheperi Church and 15 similar objects in Zagoria and Pogon, Gjirokaster, are more than just religious objects for their residents. These are historic evidence for how villages, schools and markets were organized in past centuries, how people exchanged goods, gathered in popular meetings, weddings or funerals.
