Most of the passengers were Greek and Turkish, but there were also 33 Albanians.

The pilot of the Italian Armed Forces, Antonio Laneve, declared for the Albanian state television that the cabin of his helicopter was full of burning smoke, which made the rescue operation even more challenging.

The wife of one of the cooks said that her husband had called her, telling her that he couldn’t breathe and that they couldf all die inside.

Most of the passengers were transferred to other ships, while those in difficult conditions were immediately sent to hospital.

It is yet unknown what has caused the fire. The Bari Prosecution has opened an investigation.
