A few days ago, Serbian President Alexandar Vucic declared for local media that Belgrade has sealed Kosovo’s independence with the decisions undertaken through the years.
The declaration spurred different reactions, mainly negative, but the Orthodox Church in Serbia goes beyond that.
A group of clergymen accused Vucic of even being a high-level traitor.
“Every compromise that could lead to Kosovo’s independence would be a high-level betrayal of the Serbian people”, declared the former Bishop of Herzegovina, Atanasije Jetvic.
The Serbian leader of the Orthodox church in Montenegro was more diplomatic:
“Time has brought us people who think that they are leaders, but they don’t know that heaven is the only reality in this world. The Kosovo Serbs have understood this, this is why they survived”, he said.
Officially, Serbia is a secular country, but the church has a huge influence in the decision-making. International reports have raised alarms that the influence has increased recently.
