Serbia gathers National Security Council after Kosovo declarations about Army

Serbia gathered the National Security Council to discuss the decisions
of Kosovo for transforming its Security Forces into a regular Army.

The meeting with security agencies means that Belgrade sees Kosovo’s army as a danger, which would put in question the dialogue in Brussels.

“Some people in the world underestimate Prishtina’s dedication to refuse dialogue. This is what worries and scares us, because any destabilization is difficult”, said Alexandar Vucic, Prime Minsiter of Serbia.

Serbia asked the NATO representatives in Kosovo to hold a stance about this situation, adding that Prishtina has no international support for this.

However, analyst Dushan Janjic doesn’t believe that the problem is with NATO. He says that the mandate of the KFOR mission will be verified by the UN.He believes that NATO may sign an agreement with Kosovo to use the army.

“Kosovo tries to avoid the UN Security Council for the KFOR mandate, but they should be careful because Moscow has also found an entry ticket with this topic. We must not forget Turkey and how Erdogan is making a difficult cooperation with the EU. The Army can gather more people when an armed engagement is needed, but NATO will not leave Kosovo or Bosnia”, said Dushan Janic at the Forum for Interethnic Relations.

Marko Savkovic, from the Belgrade Forum of Security says that new disagreements would be a loss for Prishtina too. “We have never before spoken about interrupting the dialogue. This is a dialogue between two parties. But there is a third party involved, and this would damage Prishtina”, Savkovic declared.

The Kosovo Serbs do not support the formation of the army, who continue with their boycott. Many believe that the army issue may be resolved in Brussels after the presidential elections in Serbia.
