Scrap metal from TPP ruins

A town that used to be famous for the sugar industry, has now turned into a place where everyone’s goal is survival.

Finding a job or creating incomes from businesses is extremely difficult in this area. Residents dig for hours to find scrap metal which they sell in informal markets.

The ruins of the Thermal Power Plant have turned into a way of living for the residents of Maliq. Obliged by poverty, digging for scrap metal seems to be the only means to survive for many families.

“We live by social welfare. We try to dig out metals from these ruins, so that we can earn something”, a resident says.

The bankrupted industry that kept the town and the crisis in Greece is increasing the number of unemployed families in this now forgotten town.

“People don’t have money. Many have returned from emigration and have no resources here”, another resident says.

The unemployment figures increase each day more, and welfare is the only hope.
