The President of the European Parliament recommended Albania to elect a
decent President that can be accepted by the entire country and the
international community. After the meeting in Brussels with the Albanian
Foreign Minister, Edmond Haxhinasto, Martin Schulz mentioned the
Presidential issue.

“We hope that the presidential election will have an acceptable result for the country and the international community. Albania needs a president who represents the entire country in a time with so many problems. We hope that the country will find a President by taking in consideration the great influence that he will have in the judicial system. These choices play a great role for the credibility of the President within the country and for the world”, Schulz declared.

After the deadline of May 24th, Minister Haxhinasto underlined the need of ending the electoral and parliamentary reforms, which the Prime Minister Sali Berisha considered as ultimatums and conditions set by the opposition.

“Mr. Schulz encouraged us to overcome the last kilometer, end the electoral reform and the Parliamentary Regulation, and hold an election process without obstacles, so that the President can reflect this new political climate in Albania”, Haxhinasto declared.

Other discussions were about the recent developments in the region; Greece, Macedonia and Kosovo. For Albania, besides the November reforms and the Presidential Election, Schulz underlined that no criteria would replace the other criteria placed by the EU, hoping to receive the EU candidate status.
