The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, commented the
postponing of Albania’s candidacy in a press conference for the European
summit.
In support of the Commission’s recommendation, the head of the European legislation declared that the member countries that block the union need to explain it. Despite the status, Schulz declared that the accession negotiations with Tirana need to start.
“As you know, the European Commission introduced the basic report for the political and economic situation. My stsance is that we need to give a date for opening the membership negotiations with Albania as soon as possible. It would be good for the member countries to explain when they block the Union”, Schulz declared.
The European Union Council did not take in consideration the resolution of the European Parliament for Albania, which appealed the member countries to grant the candidate status without delay.
One day ago it was the head of the delegation for Balkan at the European Parliament, Eduard Kukan, who declared that the postponing of the status wasn’t right and that it would have meant only encouragement for the country’s political forces, no further concrete implication in the integration process.
