Hospital waste endanger the citizens live, since they are still being
dumped on waste bins in urban areas, or even in open environments.
Clincis, hospitals and private labs don’t spend for appropriate technology to process them, or to send them in places that are licensed for this goal. They simply dump them in the closest bins of urban wastes, which are then sent to the Sharra landfill.
“Dentist clinics, which you can find all around Tirana, sign agreements just for the procedure and then consider it closed. Only 15-20 out of 1500 subjects licensed by the government have been responsible enough to respect this law”, declared Anastas Pelcini, owner of a private subject.
75 to 80 types of dangerous hospital waste materials are produced in the Tirana University Hospital Center, including sharp objects. 5 tons of anatomic wastes are sent to a private subject that is licensed to process them.
The same thing should be done by other subjects that produce hospital waste, some for lack of funds and other by abusing with the funds, who find primitive methods and do not care about the risk of citizens.
Based on this catastrophic situation of the hospital wastes, the Ministry of Environment started a discipline operation last week. But if this action will be based on the inspection of agreements, it will fail, since hospital subjects often sign the agreement but they don’t implement it.
