Saranda opened its tourist season with several ceremonies. This year the
promotional message focused on three words: “Sun, Sea and Love”.
“Memory ’78″, the Cold War bunker along the Saranda promenade is another tourist attraction that is added to the season.
Dozens of tourist businesses and restaurants have displayed their typical summer offers.
“This bunker was built with the purpose to defend Saranda, facing the direction of an imaginary enemy. We thought to turn it into a point where all tourists, and even Albanians, can learn the history of bunkers. We thought that this work of art could be inaugurated today”, said Mayor Floriana Koka.
Saranda has an accommodation capacity of 25.000 beds, and it is still dominated by one-day tourists oriented towards culture. They visit Butrint and Gjirokaster during the day, and by night they return to Corfu.
Last year Saranda received 700.000 visitors from more than 100 countries of the world, mostly from Poland and Russia.
Tourist companies expect this year moer visitors from Sweden and other Northern European countries.
Macedonian and Kosovo tourists are expected to make 35% of holiday-makers.
