The Saint Mary Dormition Church in Sopik, one of the rarest medieval objects in Albania, will be restored.
A 11 million ALL project will consolidate the walls of the church and rebuilding the roof.
The last repair works for this building were done by 1931 and 1936.
Since then, the church has suffered constant damage due to the humidity, making the southern wall almost crumble.
The Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro, said that this church is unique, and the second phase of the project will include restoring the icons as well.
“This is a unique church, with the most special icons. An extraordinary work of art for its details and symbolism, but also for the way how it has been constructed. The second phase of the project involved preparing the icons, which are the most extraordinary works inside the church”, Kumbaro declared.
The Dormition Church of Saint Mary in Sopik is the third church in Gjirokastra that is being restored, after the ones in Benja and Kosina.
